The abbreviation B.A.U.M. stands for Bundesdeutscher Arbeitskreis für Umweltbewusstes Management e. V. (Federal German Workgroup for Environmentally Aware Management; the acrononym also reads as Baum, the German word for tree).
The information and contact network for environmental management and sustainable development was established in 1984 by Hamburg entrepreneurs. Since then, 500 enterprises of all sizes and from all industries as well as institutions and individuals have joined the network.
In the course of time, B.A.U.M. has developed into the largest environmental business initiative in Europe. The network aims at sensitising companies, local municipalities and organisations to the importance of environmental protection and the idea of sustainable economic activity as well as supporting them in the ecologically efficient, economically sensible and socially fair implementation.
